From Google Voice to Microsoft Kinect, using human interaction to command consumer electronics has become all the rage these VGP-BPS8 Battery days. AT&T, in a bid to develope some of its own buzz , just held an event here in New York to rattle its voice recognition sabre. Perhaps to VGP-BPS9A/B Battery counteract today’s news that Google Voice has come to the iPhone, spokesmen from AT&T Labs touted the company’s Watson VGP-BPS9/B Battery speech engine and services platform. To show how the technology can tackle a number of tasks, exhibitors displayed many interesting if far-flung applications.

For instance within a living room setting, a voice to text function translated a TV feed between Spanish and English in real-time. VGP-BPS9/S Battery Unfortunately other more complicated (and arguably more in demand) languages like Japanese, Chinese, or Korean were not demonstrated. Even so, VGP-BPS8A Battery an AT&T spokesman floated the idea that gesture-based interaction isn’t that far off since both it and translation and use similar statistical VGP-BPS2A Battery algorithms.

AT&T also had developers showing their wares which VGP-BPS2B Battery rely on Watson technology. Speak4it, a current iPhone app allows users to touch areas on a map and search for items of interest nearby via voice commands. Vlingo, another app-maker, offers more comprehensive control of your phone by VGP-BPS2C Battery letting users issue global voice commands. For example you can order your phone to send a text message to a contact and speak the contents VGP-BPS21 of the text, all in the same breath.
Most interesting though is AT&T’s Safe (vgp-bps21a/b battery Strong Authentication For Everyone) security protocol. It uses four factors for authentication; voice, account info, validated mobile device, and location. The good news is these protocols are envisioned to operate behind the scenes to enable faster, more convenient vgp-bps21/s battery account protection and login.

Of course many of these same abilities are built into Android phones, Microsoft’s Xbox Kinect, Sony VGP-BPS9/S Battery and the now the iPhone via Google Voice. It remains to be seen how AT&T, even with the legacy of the legendary Bell Labs, can VGP-BPS9A/B Battery withstand the Google juggernaught

Design-wise, the Sony VAIO F plays a very conservative game. Our model’s chassis sports a smooth, matte gray lid, with the studio 1535 battery only embellishment being the understated Sony branding and larger VAIO logo writ in metallic silver. Weighing in at a hefty 6.4 pounds, the vostro 1510 battery VAIO F has a decidedly sturdy feel to it. Measuring 15.3 x 10.4 x 1.6 inches, the VAIO F can be stuffed into most laptop bags. However, vostro 1310 battery this laptop’s girth will make you think twice about lugging it anywhere for long. That said, the VAIO F is lighter than other desktop-replacement laptops on the market, such as the HP Envy 17 (7.5 pounds).

The VAIO F is crafted from black and dark gray plastics. While this lends a sober, business-like style to the laptop, it also isn’t what inspiron 1545 battery we’d call terribly premium; other machines in this price range offer metallic finishes. There is a little bit of flair here, such as the power button inspiron 1525 battery that sits in the circular hinge and glows green when the laptop is on and slowly pulses orange when asleep. Above the keyboard is a long latitude d630 battery speaker grille which subtly blends into the VAIO F’s dark gray color scheme. The expansive palm rest area is delicately textured.

The original goal of Boxee was pretty admirable. The startup wanted to make it easier for people to watch TV shows and other free acer battery stuff on the web without having to use a browser. Well, now Boxee has finally released its own device called (appropriately enough) the Boxee Box. So does Boxee belong in your living room, and who is it really good for?

Design
At 11.6 x 7.6 x 0.6 inches and 2.2 pounds, the ExoPC Slate is the largest slate we’ve ever Sony VGP-BPS8A Battery reviewed and, by far the bulkiest (only the now-defunct Joo Joo tablet is bigger). That’s significantly heavier than the rival Sony VGP-BPS2 Battery iPad (1.5 pounds) and more than twice as heavy as the Samsung Galaxy Tab (13.6 ounces). However, the ExoPC has a much larger display and has to accommodate larger components such as a fan to cool its Atom N450 CPU. When holding the tablet in our hands, we couldn’t Sony VGP-BPS2A Battery help but notice the heft after even a couple of minutes of use.

The all-black design aesthetic is simple, but classy. We particularly like the highly grippable soft-touch Sony VGP-BPS2B Battery rubberized back, which has the attractive pink and green ExoPC logo emblazoned on it. Our biggest issue with the design, Sony VGP-BPS2C Battery other than the weight, is that the screen smudges up with fingerprints quickly.

The 11.6-inch, 1366 x 768 display offers more screen real estate and resolution than any other tablet on the market. However, even at xps m1530 battery maximum brightness, colors seemed dim, particularly in a room with lighting that bounces off the glossy screen. Viewing angles were solid from 45 xps m1730 battery degrees to the left and right, but you’ll want to tilt the tablet toward your face to get the best view.

Rotating the display activates the accelerometer, inspiron 1420 battery which switches from portrait to landscape mode. Unfortunately, the accelerometer alternates between being too sensitive and failing to change even when we shook the tablet to encourage it. When the display does change orientations, the screen goes black and takes as vostro 1400 battery much as five seconds to finish, completely interrupting your workflow.

Even worse, when we rotated the Slate while a QuickTime movie was playing, the screen went black and Dell CF623 battery we were unable to even bring up the keyboard to hit the Esc key. Only putting the computer to sleep and waking it again allowed us to Dell latitude d610 battery regain control. When we rotated the display from landscape to portrait in the middle of playing a YouTube video, the video only took a small sliver of the screen.

Sound quality was surprisingly good, both when watching videos and listening to music. When streaming the bass-heavy R&B tune "Forget Me Nots" Dell KD476 battery from Napster, the sound was clean and loud enough to fill a room.

Touch Experience
The ExoPC slate has a capacitive touchscreen that supports two-fingered gestures. In our tests, we were Dell 1525 Battery able to use pinch-to-zoom and draw two separate lines at the same time in Windows Paint. However, we noticed occasional moments of lag r61 battery where we’d tap a button such as the Start menu and wait several seconds for the system to respond.

Ports and Webcam
For a slate, the ExoPC has a lot of connection options. On its left side are a micro HDMI port, two USB ports, and a microSD card reader. There’s also a SIM card t400 battery slot for connecting to 3G GSM networks and a docking port, though our unit did not come with any accessories and 3G will not come standard t500 battery on the initial units. Unfortunately, you can’t charge or power the device via USB, but must plug in using a proprietary AC t61 battery adapter.

The 1.3-megapixel webcam provided images of acceptable quality, though the picture turned dark and shadowy in areas without a great deal t60 battery of ambient light. When speaking on Skype, our picture was also a bit blurry.

It’s no secret that Windows 7 is not the best operating system for tablets, mainly because of its mouse-centric t60p battery heritage. All the Windows-based tablets we’ve tested suffer from serious usability issues and most have short battery life and high price tags, to boot. r60 battery The ExoPC Slate is not your typical Win 7 tablet. It covers Microsoft’s desktop with an innovative custom interface that includes its own app store. Add in a high-definition 11.6-inch screen, front-facing webcam, and multiple USB ports and you r60e battery have a tablet that truly stands out from the crowd. But does the ExoPC Slate’s uniqueness justify its $599 asking price?

Editor’s Note:When we tested the ExoPC Slate, its important UI Layer was still in beta form and many x60 battery features, such as the app market, were not functional. We’ll update this review, and reserve the right to change the rating, when a final version X60S battery of the ExoPC UI Layer comes out in mid-December.

If you’re going to shell out $399 for a netbook, it has to be special. The Samsung NF310 makes the case for its premium price with a t40 battery futuristic-chic design, a dual-core Atom processor, and a high-resolution display (1366 x 768) for a 10-inch screen. While this mini laptop doesn’t offer the longest good battery life, it’s an excellent choice.

Display and Audio
You don’t typically find a 1366 x 768-pixel display on a netbook,hp battery which makes the Samsung NF310 feel more like a regular laptop when surfing the web, working on documents, and performing other tasks. It just feels less claustrophobic. The 10.1-inch matte display has wide viewing angles, too, plus rich, deep dell battery colors. The lack of gloss means no reflections and some limited sunlight visibility.

The two speakers sitting above the keyboard supplied great audio, especially for a netbook. Thanks to sony battery SRS Premium Sound drivers, we were able to hear the distinct bass line in Superchick’s "One Girl Revolution" and rock out to Metallica’s "apple battery Enter Sandman" on just 50 percent volume. Even when watching The Simpsons: Treehouse of Horror, we didn’t have to max out the volume to hear it clearly in a room with low-level background acer battery noise.

Ports and Webcam
Aside from three USB ports, the NF310 also features VGA, Ethernet, headphone and mic connections. hp battery Unfortunately, the 4-in-1 memory card slot still has no spring lock, which means SD cards hang off the side of the netbook. There is one other minor disappointment: Unlike recent N Series netbooks, this model doesn’t come with a chargeable USB port, so users can’t keep a phone or other bus-powered accessory powered while the NF310 is batteries asleep.

So maybe all the effort wasn’t wasted

So maybe all the effort wasn’t wasted. Yes, the U.S. launch was apparently disappointing Sony VGP-BPS13 battery and even if the European and Asian launches were better, as is claimed, they obviously weren’t good enough to merit continuing the Sony VGP-BPS13A/B Battery product. Existing users will still get support. It can’t be that hard to keep the lines open for less than 200 people, right?

It will be interesting to see what the company brings us in 2011. Perhaps now that they are unencumbered by the dreams and desires Sony VGP-BPS9 Battery of Michael Arrington they can make something that’s all theirs. And if those products flop, there will be no one else to blame. If they fly, Sony VGP-BPS9/S Battery then it’ll show they had the chops all along.

In the meantime, there have to be some righteous hacks Sony VGP-BPS9A/B Battery for the JooJoo floating around out there. If a body were to want to do something cool with the JooJoo just lying around, what would that be

I feel as though I could have told them this even before the iPad came out. Actually, I did. But that’s not the point. The point is that the Sony VGP-BPS9/B Battery JooJoo may still find a place in vertical markets.

“Chandra said transportation companies, hospitals and advertising agencies were interested in a customized sony vgp-bps13/b battery version of the Joojoo. He said Fusion Garage would adapt the Joojoo’s hardware and software for specialized use by these toshiba pa3535u-1brs battery companies. These customized devices would not carry the Joojoo brand

Even though Fusion Garage founder Chandrashekar Rathakrishnan openly stated that the JooJoo tablet is “at its end of life” as far as development studio 17 battery and compatibility with future FG products goes, that doesn’t mean that the tablet is completely dead. In his widely-quoted interview studio 1737 battery with e27, Rathakrishnan admitted that, as a consumer device, it’s not really what people wanted.

I think it’s very obvious with the advance of the iPad studio 1535 battery that while web remains probably the number one thing that we do with our devices, the lack of end-to-end connectivity means that there’s a need to have a hybrid, to have both a web and non-web experience. And that’s where we fell short with our latitude e5500 battery product

Those out of step with Ping can crack open iTunes, select the Ping tab, and click the dialog box latitude e6400 battery that suggests connecting the account with Twitter. Then Ping searches for friends with Twitter accounts. Once finished, you’ll be able to latitude e6500 battery share with tweeps the music you like, review, or purchase via a tweet that will also contain a link to the mentioned content within the iTunes store.

Over on the Twitter side, any updates with Ping information will include playable song previews from any albums shared, which is a latitude e4300 battery pretty sweet service.

Will Ping’s connection to Twitter’s 175 million-strong user base help more iTunes vostro 1510 battery users to get Pinging? Probably. Facebook integration couldn’t hurt either, though

iTunes’ social networking component, Ping, joins up vostro 1310 battery with another social network today, and it’s Twitter.

Since one of the common complaints about the iTunes 10 music-focused social networking service (which launched in September) was inspiron 1545 battery that its social circle was restricted to the Ping cafeteria table, the move to promote alerts and messages in Twitter should be a welcome inspiron 1525 battery dining party to users, both existing and future

The folks over at Engadget have been very busy latitude d630 battery uncovering the juicy details on the Nexus S, the supposed follow-up to the Nexus One. Rumors about this phone have been swirling for some time, as is natural, but today we’ve seen a flurry of activity thanks to Best Buy. Let’s break studio 15 battery it down:

•This morning someone noticed a Best Buy Mobile ad that mentioned the “Nexus S latitude d620 battery for T-Mobile” that boasted “Pure Google”, which some have taken to mean that it’s a vanilla Android experience, much like the T-Mobile G2. The xps m1330 battery ad is no longer running, of course.
•An Engadget tipster then found the image on the right in a web-based flier for Best Buy Mobile. Is that a front-facing camera and inspiron 6400 battery Android 2.3 interface we see?
•Clever Chris Ziegler then utilized the advanced search function on Flickr and Picassa to look inspiron 1501 battery for images taken with a camera with the meta-label Nexus S. He found several, and the photos appear to belong to Google employees or inspiron e1505 battery their families. he further discovered that these same accounts were using a phone called the Samsung GT-i9020 just a few days before, apparently confirming the long-standing rumors that the next Nexus phone (also called the Nexus 2 at times) was being made latitude d820 battery by Samsung.
•Here’s a picture, apparently taken a month ago, of the Samsung phone in question. Google has vostro 1000 battery no comment at the moment, but it wouldn’t surprise me if the new Nexus phone looked exactly like this when it does come Dell gd761 battery out

Design
The NF310 is a bold departure from your traditional netbook. With the charcoal gray lid closed, you can see the outline of a wave along the sides. Once open, the curve creates a shallow well on the silver deck where the keyboard sits. This bump makes the 1.2-inch thick system a little bulky, but the rounded corners and tapered edges latitude d830 battery help give the NF310 an air of sleekness. The chunkier back half and slightly jutting battery make the 2.8-pound netbook comfortable to inspiron 1520 battery carry one-handed.

The lid gives off a metallic impression, but the plastic coating vostro 1500 battery collects smudges easily and leaves it looking messy. We wish Samsung would offer more color options. Underneath the lid, a glossy plastic bezel with a dotted pattern surrounds the display. The pattern is cool, but the bezel is a bit larger than inspiron 1720 battery we’d like.

Heat
Throughout our hands-on time, the NF310 stayed relatively cool, even when sitting on our lap. After playing good battery a Hulu video at full screen for 15 seconds, we measured the temperature between the G and H keys, on the touchpad, and in the center hp battery of the bottom. The keyboard only reached 82 degrees, while the touchpad and bottom measured 81–well within our preferred comfort zone sony battery for laptops.

Keyboard and Touchpad
With the NF310, Samsung went with an island-style keyboard. We found the layout just as easy to use as the other N Series models, dell battery and were able to reach our normal typing speed right away. Most keys are large enough and well-placed. We just wish the space bar were slightly larger, as apple battery we sometimes accidentally hit the left Alt key instead.

The 2.9 x 1.5-inch touchpad is a comfortable size, and we like acer battery that it’s bordered by a strip of metal so our finger knew when it had strayed from the touch surface. There was no friction to hinder us, and the spun-metal look of the pad is a nice battery touch.

Even those who visit Google

Even those who visit Google.com to search may be disappointed to know that you VGP-BPS13 can only see the first search result above the fold. As you can see in the screen shot above, there’s so much space taken up by auto suggestions that VGP-BPS13A/B there’s only enough room for the top entry to appear on the screen, though you can scroll down to see more results. This holds true whether you’re in landscape mode with a physical keyboard out or in portrait mode using the virtual keyboard. In landscape mode VGP-BPS13A/S with virtual keyboard, there’s no room at all for Google instant results.

With the feature enabled, users can type into the search box on the Google home page and VGP-BPS9 watch as the search box moves to the top of the screen and a set of results appears below and updates as they keep typing in the query. As VGP-BPS8 with Google instant on the desktop, you do not need to hit the Search button for results to appear.

Google Instant, the Google feature that shows search results as you type, has come to mobile. Today, the company announced VGP-BPS9A/B that uses of iOS and Android 2.2-powered devices are able to get Google instant simply by pointing their mobile web browsers to Google.com and clicking VGP-BPS9/B on the link which says “Instant (beta) is off: Turn On.”

We tested the new Google Instant for mobile on a VGP-BPS9/S Motorola Droid running Android 2.2 and found that it works as advertised, but isn’t all that convenient, because it only works from within the Google web site. If, like us, you most often enter your search queries directly into the browser’s address bar or into the VGP-BPS8A search box that appears when you hit the magnifying glass button, you won’t see this new feature.

Targeted squarely at the highly mobile, Acer’s new 11.6-inch Aspire TimelineX 1830T-68U118 has a VGP-BPS2 lot of punch for its size. Though a little on the pricey side compared to its tiny netbook cousins, the $899 1830T comes well equipped with a VGP-BPS2A much faster processor than the 11-inch MacBook Air (a 1.4-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) and gobs more storage space for $100 less. It also lasts longer on a charge, providing more than 6 hours of runtime. Best of all, you get all this goodness in a trim and attractive business-casual VGP-BPS2B design that will look equally at home in the conference room or the student library. Still, is this svelte performer worth the premium over other 11-inch VGP-BPS2C Windows ultraportables?

Heat
The 1830T was one relatively cool customer on our VGP-BPS21A/B heat tests. After playing a Hulu video for 15 minutes, we measured 85 and 87 degrees at the Aspire’s touchpad and between the G and H keys respectively. That said, we recorded a higher 95-degree temperature at the center of the undercarriage. Still, that didn’t quite trigger VGP-BPS21A our heat alarms, since we consider anything over 100 degrees to be toasty.

Design
Weighing in at a featherweight 3 pounds (the same as its predecessor), this newly refreshed 1830T is also just VGP-BPS21B over an inch thick. That’s beefier than the 11-inch MacBook Air (.11 to .68 inches), but it’s a breeze to slip this machine into a bag and tote around town. The 1830T vgp-bps21a shares other design accoutrements with its forerunner. You’ll find a similar fingerprint-resistant black cover featuring a texturized surface, making for a better grip by damp hands between tense meetings and lectures.

Flipping open the 1830T reveals its glossy black vgp-bps21b battery bezel, which is unfortunately prone to prints, and its matte black keyboard set in brushed gun-metal gray aluminum. Though it boasts a sizeable six-cell battery, the power source doesn’t protrude behind the laptop and won’t prove to be a hindrance or snag vgp-bps21 stray cords.

The Aspire’s 1.3-megapixel webcam is standard fare. Colors looked a bit washed out but pa3535u-1brs battery video performance was adequate. The bundled Acer Crystal Eye software does allow you to change the resolution, shoot video, snap dell studio 17 battery quick pics, and alter various video processing vectors such as contrast, gamma, and hue.

Ports and Webcam
On the left side of the 1830T you’ll find a VGA port, power connector, and USB port. As with the previous model we reviewed, vgp-bps13/b there is an HDMI v1.3 port here as well. With it you’ll be able to output HD video to your HDTV. On the right side are headphone and mic jacks,VGP-BPS13 two additional USB ports, plus a Kensington lock slot and Ethernet. To activate Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, a keyboard shortcut is provided (no VGP-BPS13A/B physical switches are offered).

Keyboard and Touchpad

Almost identical to the previous 1830T, this refresh sports the same flat square-style keys crafted with a deliberately rough VGP-BPS9 surface for additional texture. Even so, this does not make up for the somewhat shallow key travel and mushy feel when typing. Also,VGP-BPS10 the keyboard layout, while close to full-size and an accomplishment for a laptop of this small stature, feels a bit cramped. Still, both left and right shift keys are large enough and you can use the 1830T pound out larger hp battery documents when necessary.

The touchpad is on the petite side at 2.5 x 1.3 inches. sony battery Compounding the problem of tiny input area, the pad appears virtually invisible against the brushed-metal styling of the wrist rest. Fingers also don’t slide well against its textured surface. This resulted in a number of uncertain swipes and scrolling errors on good battery our part. Even so, the touchpad supports multi-gesture pinch and zoom motions, which comes in especially handy apple battery when web surfing.

today Barnes and Noble officially introduced the Nook Color

As expected, today Barnes and Noble officially introduced the Nook Color, a 7-inch Toshiba PA3534U-1BRS Battery Android-based tablet that offers a full-color touch screen, Wi-Fi connectivity, and some slick social network interactivity. toshiba pa3535u-1brs battery It looks just like the leaked picture we saw yesterday, with the 16:9 aspect ratio (similar to the Galaxy Tab) and just one physical button. It runs on Android 2.0, but, just as with the original Nook, B&N designed the UI seemingly top to bottom Sony VGP-BPS13 battery to offer a specific experience.

First, the hardware: At just 8.1 x 5.0 x 0.48 inches in size and 15.8 ounces it’s definitely thin Sony VGP-BPS13A/B Battery and light (though slightly larger and heavier than the original Nook). The 4010 mAh battery is rated to last up to 8 hours; no word yet on Sony VGP-BPS9 Battery how long a standby time it has. The 7-inch, capacitive touch LCD display has a resolution of 1024 x 600 and technology that keeps glare down and offers wide viewing angles. It’ll ship with 8GB of on-board memory and has a Sony VGP-BPS9/B Battery microSD expansion slot.

From the short demo we just saw the Android 2.0-based user interface looks very well-designed Sony VGP-BPS9/S Battery and easy to use. There’s no word yet on the chip running the Nook Color, but our experience with Android and LCD-based eReaders tells us Sony VGP-BPS9A/B Battery that the hardware needs to be speedy just as the software needs to be intuitive.

Unlike the original Nook, the Nook Color doesn’t come with 3G, only Wi-Fi (b/g/n). Barnes & Noble’s CEO indicated that this was to keep Dell inspiron 1545 battery the price down. Presumably not only because adding a 3G radio would have added to the cost, but also because wireless carriers are less dell latitude e6400 battery likely to allow a tablet-like device to have unlimited connectivity without a monthly fee.

Though the company stressed several times that the focus of this device dell studio 17 battery will be reading, the Nook Color also comes with apps. Aside from the browser there’s also a media player (audio and video), Pandora, and games like Sudoku and chess. Nook has also opened a developer program to encourage app creators dell studio 1737 battery to make Nook-compatible software. Upcoming apps include Lonely Planet, Dictionary.com, and QuickOffice. Plus, users will be able to publish quotes dell studio 1535 battery from the books they’re reading to social networks like Twitter and Facebook right from the page (similar dell latitude e5500 battery to the latest Kindle).

On the document front, users will now be able to read more than just PDFs. They’ll be able to view MS Office documents dell latitude e6400 battery (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and, when the QuickOffice app is ready, hopefully edit, too. This functionality is what may sway customers looking dell latitude e6500 battery for a tablet. If the Nook Color can serve as eReader and document editor and quick web browser, they may not need any of the dell latitude e4300 battery other thousands of apps in the Android Market. It’s no surprise that the Nook Color won’t be able to access the Market, though with the new Nook Developer program, Barnes & Noble is hoping to encourage programmers to create apps dell vostro 1510 battery that fit in with the eReading theme. (Please, someone make a notes app, quick!)

The bookseller also showed off some of the enhancements in eBooks and ePeriodicals that will go dell vostro 1310 battery with this new Nook. Nook Kids will feature full-color picture and chapter books, hundreds of which will have some interactive Dell inspiron 1545 battery elements built in. These will range from elements on the page your child can move via touch, or just small animations — in one book we saw birds flying past a window, in another the character blinked occasionally. Kids can also tap a button to hear a “professional Dell inspiron 1525 battery narrator” read the book to them. Will parents be comfortable handing over the Nook Color to young kids? I’m not sure I would. Then Dell latitude d630 battery again, I see people handing over their iPhones and iPads to kids all the time, so perhaps this will be no different.

Aside from the music element, another nice multimedia Dell studio 15 battery feature is the ability to play video. Users can load their own MP4s on the device, or watch embedded videos in special enhanced eBooks. The eReader can’t handle Flash yet, but it’s not out of the question for future Dell latitude d620 battery updates.

We were able to grab some short hands-on time

We were able to grab some short hands-on time with the newly-announced Sony VGP-BPS9 Battery Nook Color at today’s event and we came away impressed, overall.

The software — though not final — has a slick, Sony VGP-BPS9/B Battery well thought out UI and the 7-inch capacitive touch screen offers some beautiful colors. Unlike the slew of Android-based, LCD display eReaders we’ve seen over the past year, the Nook Color hits all the right notes. The display is, as I mentioned, Sony VGP-BPS9/S Battery capacitive instead of resistive and quite responsive to touch. We noted a few times where it wasn’t quite behaving, but B&N reps Sony VGP-BPS9A/B Battery pointed out that the units we saw were not final.

We don’t know which chip is driving the device, Sony VGP-BPS13 battery though it seems well up to handling Android 2.0, which is what the UI is built on. At just under a pound, it feels sturdy and solid, and the build quality looks good. At a glance, it’s one of the best entrants into the LCD eReader category we’ve seen Sony VGP-BPS13A/B Battery so far

The Wi-Fi Alliance just announced that soon many of our wi-fi connected devices will be able to sony vgp-bps13/b battery bypass the router and connect directly to each other via Wi-Fi Direct. This new protocol tweaks the software of Wi-Fi chips to toshiba pa3535u-1brs battery allow, say your camera to send images to your phone using Wi-Fi, but with nary a router in site.

In practice, it’ll work similarly to Bluetooth pairing; you enter a code or push a button to initially activate the connection. The idea is Toshiba PA3534U-1BRS Battery that this technology will also make wireless printing easier, whether you’re at home or at a photo printing kiosk. The Wi-Fi Alliance dell studio 17 battery promises that Wi-Fi Direct will maintain current wireless speeds and be secure with WPA2 encryption. New Wi-Fi Direct dell studio 1737 battery products will also work with older products that have traditional wireless capabilities, which means you won’t have to overhaul your gadget collection just yet. You can expect to see Wi-Fi Direct appearing in products this holiday dell studio 1535 battery season

Privacy is dead. Between Facebook’s security flaws and more companies dell latitude e5500 battery practicing data scrapping, there can be no doubt. But just in case you weren’t convinced, the Firesheep add-on for Firefox makes it dell latitude e6400 battery even more apparent by letting everyone in on seeing each other’s internet identity.
Firesheep is a Firefox extension created by Eric Butler for the sole purpose of showing the world how little security there dell latitude e6500 battery is on the internet. The problem that Butler wants to point out is that most popular sites (such as Facebook, Flickr, Amazon.com, Dropbox, dell latitude e4300 battery Evernote, and more) only secure the front end of their websites. So your login page might be HTTPS or SSL encrypted, but once dell vostro 1510 battery you go past that, most sites use an unsecured connection that only need a simple cookie check.

Firesheep demonstrates how this vulnerability is frighteningly easy to exploit, as it only needs other people to share an IP address from an dell vostro 1310 battery open Wi-Fi hotspot and for Firefox to be launched. The browser will come up with a new side bar that takes a few moments to populate Dell inspiron 1545 battery a list of user names and photographs (if available). When you click over to a persons name, the extension intercepts their session and allows Dell inspiron 1525 battery the user to continue browsing the website as them. Firesheep is free, open source program ready for anyone who wants to try and is available now for Mac OS X and Windows, with Linux support on good battery the way.

This is a big deal as long as website developers don’t take hp battery responsibility and secure their sites. But while we hold our collective breaths, here’s a handful of ways to protect your privacy, including our guide to removing your browser’s cookies: Close the Cookie Jar: How to Protect Your Privacy. Also a post dell battery at TechCrunch points out that there are two pre-existing Firefox extensions—Force-TLS 2.0 and HTTPS Everywhere—that force websites to use good battery the secure HTTPS protocol

ASUS G73Jw-A1

This stealth fighter-styled system gets an updated CPU and Nvidia graphics.

Last Spring, ASUS wowed us with its G73Jh gaming notebook, VGP-BPS9/B and now the company is back with a refreshed version that pairs the same great design with a faster processor, a more powerful Nvidia GTX 460 graphics chip, VGP-BPS9 and a USB 3.0 port for good measure. But are the improved specs enough to give this system a leg up on the competition?

Design
The G73JW-A1 is identical to the G73Jh-A2. At 8.8 pounds and 16.6 x 12.8 x 2.3 inches, the ASUS G73JW-A1 VGP-BPS9/S would never be mistaken for an ultraportable, but compared to some other systems we’ve tested–such as the 10.6-pound, 18-inch Toshiba Qosmio X505–it seems rather svelte. Carrying it and its 2-pound power brick around in an oversize messenger-style bag was no problem even when we had to stand for a long time VGP-BPS9A/B on the bus.

Modeled after the F-117 Nighthawk stealth fighter, the G73JW-A1 lacks the bling Vostro 1510 Battery of colorful notebooks like the Alienware M17x, but its sleek, angular design and gunmetal gray exterior make it one of the most attractive Inspiron 1545 battery systems we’ve seen. The dual exhausts on the back combine with the subtle silver ASUS logo and Republic of Gaming emblem to make this product look more like one of the planes you’d fly in a game than the notebook you’d be gaming on. Open up the lid, and the subtle theme continues inside. Only a few small buttons sit on top of the simple black keyboard and the gray touchpad simply blends into the deck. No colorful status lights or bright Latitude E6400 Battery red buttons here.

What really makes the G73JW-A1 stand out is the rubberized material used on both VGP-BPS13B/Q the lid and deck. More notebooks should use this type of material, because it’s incredibly comfortable to touch, resists finger prints, stays cool, and provides a significant feeling of durability and quality.

Keyboard and Touchpad
Unfortunately, the G73JW-A1’s backlit VGP-BPS13/B keyboard is a huge disappointment, with tiny stiff keys that are difficult for both typists and gamers alike. On the ten thumbs typing test, we got one of our worst scores ever–69 words per minute and a 3-percent error rate as opposed to our average rate of 80 wpm VGP-BPS13 and 1-percent. And that was the third time we tried; on the first two attempts we made so many errors that we just had to restart.

One reason the keyboard is so difficult to touch type on is that the hard keys give really VGP-BPS13A/B weak tactile feedback and require really hard and deliberate strokes. Another issue is that their flat, square shape lacks the kind of curves that make it easy to feel your way around the rows, and the narrow space between them seems smaller than other devices.

Why ASUS decided to not use all available space Dell GD761 Battery for the keyboard remains a mystery. The chassis is 16-inches wide, but has 1.5 inches of empty plastic on either side of the keyboard. Meanwhile, The arrow keys and numeric keypad–both essential for game play–are actually smaller than the rest of the keys, making it difficult to use them as controls. To make matters worse, the sharp incline and deep palm rest (more wasted space) can make it hard to keep your hands from PA3534U-1BRS slipping backward as you type.

Size-wise, the 4.4 x 2.2-inch touchpad has everything going for it: Vostro 1710 Battery a large smooth, but not too smooth surface, multitouch gesture support, and two discrete buttons that offer just the right amount of tactile feedback. However, on the first review unit we received, the cursor would get stuck and then jump unexpectedly Vostro 1720 Battery around the screen; we didn’t experience this problem on a second review unit. Considering battery that many gamers use mice, the lack of a touchpad on/off button is a glaring omission.

Heat
For a notebook with a Core i7 CPU and power good battery Nvidia graphics card under the hood, the G73JW-A1 stays extremely cool. After streaming a video at full screen for 15 minutes, we measured the keyboard at a cool 87 degrees, the bottom at a temperate 90 degrees, and the touchpad at a chilly 78 degrees. Unlike other gaming battery notebooks that have hot palm rests and decks, we didn’t notice a single hot spot on the G73JW-A1 even when we were gaming and that’s battery quite an impressive feat. We consider temperatures below 95 degrees comfortable and below 90 degrees to be basically imperceptible.

Kensington KeyFolio Bluetooth Keyboard and Case for iPad

This keyboard lets you type much faster than you can with touch-typing VGP-BPS13 while protecting your tablet, but is it worth $99?

When the iPad first came out, there was a lot sony VGP-BPS9/B Battery of speculation as to whether it could replace a full-fledged notebook. However, many came to realize that, without a keyboard, it was difficult to type longer documents. Enter the Kensington KeyFolio, a Bluetooth keyboard built into an iPad case. Will this $99 accessory Sony VGP-BPS9A/B Battery let you leave your laptop behind?

Design
From the outside, the KeyFolio looks like an elegant iPad case–which in fact, it is. It’s made sony VGP-BPS9 battery of black faux leather with white stitching. Flip over the cover, and you reveal its second function as a wireless keyboard.

The keyboard is covered in a rubber membrane sony VGP-BPS9/S battery that protects it from spills and prevents the screen from getting scratched. A few ridges above the keyboard let you adjust the angle of the iPad, but in doing so, it covers the Pairing button. There’s no way to secure the iPad to the keyboard, so the KeyFolio has to Vostro 1510 Battery be used on a flat surface such as a desk; putting it on our lap caused the iPad to fall backwards.

The case weighs just over one pound, which is light in the grand scheme of things, but, when Inspiron 1545 battery coupled with the 1.5-pound iPad, this combo weighs almost as much as the Asus Eee PC 1015PEM.

Performance
Pairing the KeyFolio with the iPad was easy. Simply Dell Latitude E6400 Battery turn the keyboard on (there’s a small switch on the right side above the keys), and press the large Connect button on the top. A message will appear on the screen asking you to type in a code on the keyboard to complete the pairing.

The keyboard on the KeyFolio is about the same size as one you’d find on a netbook. However, it’s not nearly as good as, say, the Vostro 1710 Battery Toshiba Mini NB305. The rubber membrane was soft to the touch, and in general, we found the keys responsive. In fact, they Vostro 1720 Battery were a bit too responsive; we found that we would often accidentally type the same letter twice in a row until we figured out just how much pressure to apply.

We found the KeyFolio, like early netbook toshiba PA3534U-1BRS Battery keyboards, to be slightly irregular. For example, in order to make room for arrow keys, there’s no right Shift key. (For touch typists, that’s a dealbreaker right there.) Also, the quote button is not in its usual place between L and Enter–only the Colon key Sony VGP-BPS13A/B Battery is there. Until we realized this, we found ourselves writing things such as "I;m" instead if "I’m."

However, we like that Kensington reversed the function keys; that is, media controls and volume Dell GD761 Battery can be accessed without having to press the Fn key first. Also, the F5 key can be used to bring up the on-screen keyboard, which is nice when you don’t want to use Kensington’s

The KeyFolio’s battery is rated to last 90 hours; that’s a lot of typing. When–or if–it runs low, you can recharge it using the microUSB port on the side.

Verdict
The idea that you can take just a tablet good battery with you on business trips is an intoxicating one, as it would free up weight battery and room in your carry-on. The $99 Kensington KeyFolio makes this dream a reality. However, the keyboard’s misplaced keys (and missing right Shift key), the inability to use it securely in one’s lap, and oversensitivity are real turn-offs. The KeyFolio is certainly better than nothing, but you may want to wait until something better comes battery along.

Samsung R540-11

Samsung’s latest 15-inch notebook performs well and plays games VGP-BPS9/B smoothly, but its faux wood design isn’t for everyone.

Since it entered the U.S. VGP-BPS9A/B notebook market, Samsung has established a reputation for pairing powerful components with head-turning designs. The Samsung RR540 continues that trend, though not necessarily in the best way possible. This 15-inch laptop ($999 as configured) has the power to best even more VGP-BPS9 expensive machines in its weight class and offers smooth Blu-ray playback. However, while the faux-wood pattern on the lid and deck VGP-BPS9/S will certainly get stares, you’ll either love it or hate it.

Design
At 5.5 pounds and 14.9 x 10.1 x 1.4 inches, the R540 is relatively light Dell Vostro 1510 Battery for a notebook with this size display. The notebook has a smooth, brown plastic lid with a wood grain pattern, making it look like a Formica countertop. Not only does this surface pick up fingerprints, it has a somewhat cheap feel.

On the inside, Samsung’s attempts Dell Inspiron 1545 battery to mimic wooden surfaces are more successful. The palm rest and chassis, still made of brown plastic, at least have etched grains instead of painted-on ones, along with a more subtle matte finish. The touch buttons, too, have this faux-wood look, although the touchpad itself is smooth, with a pattern of brown dots.

We give Samsung props for trying something different, but we much prefer the look and feel of the ASUS’s U33Jc. That 13-inch notebook Dell Latitude E6400 Battery uses real bamboo, and it’s much more elegant.

Keyboard and Touchpad
The R540 has terraced keys that are positioned close together, as opposed to a chiclet-style VGP-BPS13/B layout. Even with amply sized keys, the keyboard deck can still accommodate a full number pad. Particularly since Samsung didn’t skimp on the Enter and right Shift keys, we were able to type quickly (for us, at least) at a rate of 93 words per minute. As we typed, though, we felt some flex beneath our fingers; this keyboard VGP-BPS13 panel isn’t the sturdiest on the block

The touchpad isn’t large, at 2.8 x 1.6 inches, but it felt smooth and offered next to no resistance. The twin touch buttons, likewise, VGP-BPS13B/Q are easy to press, although they’re on the noisy side and we found ourselves wishing they were a bit taller so they could better VGP-BPS13A/B accommodate the pad of our finger.

Ambient Heat
Even after extended use, the R540 doesn’t get as hot as other notebooks in its class. After Vostro 1710 Battery watching a Hulu clip at full screen for 15 minutes, we measured temperatures of 88 degrees on the touchpad, 89 degrees at the center of the keyboard, and 83 degrees on the underside of the machine. (It did, however, reach a hot 100 degrees near the vent.) That’s not bad when you consider that the average notebook this size Vostro 1720 Battery reaches temperatures of 90, 93, and 97 degrees in the same spots.

Display and Sound
The 15.6-inch display has a resolution of 1366 x 768, which is standard for an inexpensive notebook of this size, and is good dell Latitude E5400 Battery enough to watch 720p video. Although it has a Blu-ray player, the benefits might be lost on this lower-resolution display. When we watched "The Other Boleyn Girl" on Blu-ray, the picture was sharp, colors accurate, and the screen bright, but thanks to the display’s glossy finish we had a hard time making out the picture when watching dell Latitude E4300 Battery from the sides or with the lid pushed forward.

The twin speakers, located above dell Latitude E6500 Battery the keyboard, produced fairly strong sound, given that this isn’t a souped-up multimedia machine. "Maria, Maria" by Santana, for instance, sounded as it should both at medium and high volumes, and at all times we were able to make out the strong bass notes. More guitar-based battery songs, such as "Someday" by The Strokes, sounded clear and balanced as well.

Ports and Webcam
The R540 has a predictable range good battery of ports, including three USB 2.0, HDMI and VGA output, an Ethernet jack, Kensington lock slot, dell Latitude E5500 Battery headphone and mic ports, and an SD card reader. (While SD is the most common format, people who own, say, Sony cameras and use Memory Stick cards, are out of luck.)

The webcam’s VGA video was adequate, but good battery during a Skype call voices sounded weak and not completely clear. We could hear an echo when we spoke, and voices became harder to make out even when we simply leaned back in our chair, away from the camera. On the plus side, our videos and still photos battery were well-lit, and the included CyberLink YouCam software offers an array of fun filters, animations, 2D frames, and avatars

The ASUS UL20FT is an all-new update to the popular UL20A

The ASUS UL20FT is an all-new update to the popular UL20A. Featuring a high-performance VGP-BPS9/B Intel Core i3 processor and impressive battery life, this thin and light laptop has a great deal to offer. The team at Notebook Review has an exclusive first look at this new 12-inch notebook, and we’re excited to show you how this lightweight laptop performs. Read on to find out if the UL20FT deserves a place VGP-BPS9A/B on your notebook shopping list.

Build and Design
The ASUS UL series were some of the first laptops on the market to use Intel Consumer Ultra Low Voltage (CULV) processors. These CPUs VGP-BPS9 consumed only a fraction of the power that other processors required, meaning any laptop running a CULV processor could last longer on a single battery charge and the laptop itself could be made thinner and lighter because these processors didn’t require the massive VGP-BPS13 cooling systems that other laptops needed.

The ASUS UL20A was the first 12-inch laptop in the UL series and quickly became popular VGP-BPS9/S with students and working adults who needed a lightweight laptop. The unfortunate down side to the UL20A was that it used a relatively low-performance version of the CULV processors. Now ASUS has revived the UL20 as the UL20FT, featuring a new Core i3 low voltage processor and a larger hard drive. The notebook chassis Vostro 1510 Battery itself remains unchanged other than a slight modification to accommodate a new 16:9 ratio widescreen display.

The build quality of the UL20FT is very VGP-BPS13A/B good with a solid main chassis that doesn’t squeak, creak, or flex even under significant pressure. The Inspiron 1545 battery screen hinges are nice and tight, making it a little difficult to open the laptop with one hand but also helping to keep the screen where you want it. The metal-covered screen lid feels extremely nice and offers a fair amount of structural rigidity, but the middle of the screen still flexes under heavy pressure. The screen itself also shows E6400 Battery obvious signs of distortion when you press on the back of the screen lid, so the attractive metal lid might not offer much protection.

The bottom of the notebook includes a single access plate for the RAM and the hard drive. The two VGP-BPS13/B RAM slots are located side-by-side rather than being stacked. This internal layout helps keep the chassis design as thin as possible. The 2GB memory module only takes up a single slot so it’s easy to upgrade to 4GB simply by purchasing an extra 2GB stick of memory. Unfortunately, it’s significantly more difficult to access Studio 17 Battery the wireless card because of the thin design, so don’t expect to swap out the Wi-Fi card for another model without completely disassembling the laptop. That said, the target audience for this notebook probably isn’t likely to make any changes beyond memory upgrades an a possible hard Studio 1737 Battery drive swap.

Screen and Speakers
The 12.1-inch diagonal display on the UL20FT-A1 features LED backlighting and a 16:9 aspect Studio 1535 Battery ratio with 1366 x 768 resolution. We’d give this screen a "good" rating within the narrow vertical viewing angle sweet spot. The backlight in our review unit is even and bright but the top left corner of the screen suffers from a little backlight bleed. Contrast is sharp and colors are good at default settings. Vertical viewing angles E5400 Battery are just as narrow as we typically see with most laptops while the horizontal viewing angles (side view) are nearly flawless. If you are using this laptop for color-accurate editing you will need to be certain you’re viewing the screen from straight ahead.

The ASUS UL20FT features Altec-Lansing stereo speakers located just below the palm rests on the bottom front edge of the notebook. The speakers E4300 Battery sound terrific when the laptop is resting on a hard surface like a desk as the sound bounces up off the desk and toward the user. Unfortunately, the sound isn’t as good if you’re using this notebook as a "laptop." In the NotebookReview.com test lab we usually call downward-facing speaker "crotch speakers" because E6500 Battery they direct sound at your lap rather than your ears. If you’re using the UL20FT on your lap you can expect the audio to sound muffled and distorted against your legs. On the other hand, the headphone jack provides a great, static-free connection for external speakers or earphones.

Keyboard and Touchpad
The Chiclet-style keyboard on the UL20FT is an E5500 Battery adequate design with a good support frame underneath. Individual keys are a little mushy, but still provide acceptable feedback when pressed. There are no dedicated multimedia keys, but the arrow keys do serve double duty as media controls when used with the function (fn) key. Each key is flat with a nice matte texture and a little extra spacing to prevent typos. The keyboard frame (the silver surrounding the black keys) on our review sample suffers from a bit Vostro 1400 Battery of bounce or flex when you press down firmly with your fingers, but this isn’t a problem when typing.

The Synaptics touchpad is a quality touchpad interface with a lightly textured surface and excellent Vostro 1500 Battery responsiveness. The touchpad itself is a little small, but that is to be expected on a 12-inch laptop. The touchpad drivers good battery provide excellent accuracy and minimal lag with a range of options. The touchpad buttons are hidden under a single "rocker bar" and have a shallow press with audible "click" when pressed. I really hate single touchpad buttons … particularly when there is no clear division between the left and right sides. I frequently pressed down too close to the middle of the single button and either failed to activate the touchpad button or accidentally pressed the wrong side of the touchpad. ASUS designers need to either completely separate the touchpad buttons or at least make a small indented area in the middle so you can fell where the left touchpad button ends and the right battery button begins.

Ports and Features
The ASUS UL20FT offers a fairly average number of ports for a 12-inch notebook. ASUS dell battery gives you three USB 2.0 ports, Ethernet, two video out ports, a media card reader and dual audio jacks. This is pretty much par battery for the course when it comes to thin and light laptops and netbooks. Still, we would have liked to see at least one high speed data port, suach as USB 3.0, eSATA or even an ExpressCard slot, on this laptop. The UL20FT also lacks an optical drive in order to make the chassis as thin as possible, but this will probably hp battery only bother people who like to watch DVDs during a flight.
