Those basic specs aside, we now take a closer look at this AUO panel, model number B173RW01 V3. The maximum screen brightness of 214 cd/m2 is nothing more than average. Fortunately, the screen is incredibly evenly lit at a 94% brightness distribution. Sony VGP-BPS9/S battery

This model is luckily unaffected by clouding of LEDs or poor brightness distribution that often plagues its competitors of the same price range.Sony VGP-BPS9 battery

Other measurements we took only confirm this picture of a mediocre display. Sony VGP-BPS9A/B battery The black level is a bit too high at 1.1 cd/m2, making blacks appear more gray and bringing down the contrast to a low 193:1. High picture contrast is most important in making films appear more vivid and enjoyable to watch. For other purposes, the colors and sharpness of the picture are perfectly fine and will likely go unnoticed.Sony VGP-BPS9A/S battery

HP Pavilion g7 vs. sRGB (t)We didn’t expect the Pavillion to display a very broad range of colors. Still, the image at the right here shows that the HP’s color space here covers a good deal of the sRGB reference color space. This means, the notebook is not terrible for a professional applications like image processing.Sony VGP-BPS13A/B battery

Outdoors, the notebook can’t quite overcome the reflective rays of the sun. The screen brightness would otherwise have been high enough if it weren’t for the glossy screen that makes the display more of a mirror than a computer screen.Sony VGP-BPS13 battery

Finally, the range of viewing angles confirms our suspicious about this being a cheap TN panel. Looking at the screen from the left or the right, the picture remains discernible for viewing angles up to 45o away from the ideal. Sony VGP-BPS13A/Q battery

Vertically, this happens much faster. Even a small tilt away from the ideal position results in color inversion or an over-exposed looking picture (see image below). Get a better impression of this phenomenon by watching the video below.Sony VGP-BPS13/B battery

The hardware within the g7 is not limited by much except for your own imagination. The ample selection of CPUs allows you to extensively customize to match your needs. In addition to older Intel CPUs, AMD processors as well as Intel’s new line of Sandy Bridge processors are available for the g7. Sony VGP-BPS13B/B battery

The model we reviewed is equipped with an AMD Phenom II X4 P960 quad-core processor. Running at a base clock rate of 1.8 GHz with only a 2 MB L2-cache it can be considered an inexpensive (but relatively weak) option for multi-core processing. Sony VGP-BPS13B/Q battery

If you’re looking for more power, the new Sandy Bridge CPUs—which are manufactured via the ultramodern 32 nm process—might be the way to go with their speedy data retrieval from L3 cache. Sony VGP-BPS13A/S battery

The AMD Phenom processor—found in the particular configuration we’re reviewing here—only manages a performance on par with the previous generation of Intel’s mobile CPUs, however.Sony VGP-BPS13/Q battery

Moving on to the graphics card, things get a little more interesting. In addition to the on-board AMD Radeon HD 4250 graphics card, we also find the AMD Radeon HD 6470M dedicated graphics card with 1 GB RAM. Sony VGP-BPS8 battery

With 160 stream processors, UVD3 video decoder and DirectX 11 support,Sony VGP-BPS8A battery this GPU proudly sports the latest graphics technology. The manual graphics card switching is not the most convenient way to achieve a good balance between energy efficiency and powerful graphics rendering. Sony VGP-BPS10 battery

In the Catalyst Control Center,Sony VGP-BPS2 battery you can switch between which of the two GPUs is active. The new AMD PowerXpress 4.0 aka BACON (automatic switchable graphics) is not installed. But since BACON is still little more than a prototype, it’s probably a good thing you have to manually switch graphics cards—which functions flawlessly by the way.Sony VGP-BPS2A battery

The first tests we ran dealt with the performance of the processor. The single-core performance is particularly limited due to the lack of a L3-cache. The CineBench R10 (64-Bit) benchmark from Maxon only confirms this. Sony VGP-BPS2B battery

Earning a mere 1922 points, the CPU in place here ranks in within the bottom third of our entire database. A very similar score is produced by the Intel Core i3-330M. The current mainstream model, the Core i5-2410M, runs 57.2% more quickly at 4493 points.Sony VGP-BPS2C battery

In the Multi-Thread Rendering,Sony VGP-BPS22 battery the AMD processor here picks up the pace and places closer to average with 6649 points. The new AMD Llano APU A6-3410MX in the HP Pavilion dv6-6110eg earns 7198 points (+ 7.6 %). The dual-core i5 alternative is even faster (+ 29,9 %). Even Intel’s current starter model from Intel, the Core i3-2310M, is a bit faster than the P960 (+ 9.3 %).Sony VGP-BPS22A battery

While the Envy 17 we reviewed in September stayed relatively cool, we noticed much Sony VGP-BPS9/S Battery warmer temperatures on the Envy 17 3D. After playing a Hulu video at full screen for 15 minutes, the touchpad stayed a chilly Sony VGP-BPS13 battery 84 degrees Fahrenheit, but the space between the G and H keys was a very warm 105 degrees, and the middle of the underside was 100 degrees.

The left side of the Envy 17 3D is the real trouble area. We can accept a fan that blows 120-degree air. But after we played Sony VGP-BPS13A/B Battery Call of Duty for 10 minutes, the left Shift and Caps Lock keys were a blazing 125 degrees. That’s sony vgp-bps13s Battery disturbing.

Design
Looks-wise, the 2010 HP Pavilion dm3t is a huge departure from last year’s notebook with the same name, but to us that’s sony vgp-bps13/s Battery a good thing. Instead of a brushed aluminum lid, the new dm3t’s lid and underside are coated in a soft-touch plastic that was comfortable to hold, sony vgp-bps8 battery but isn’t curved like the older dm3. Inside, the deck is made of brushed aluminum and matches the island-style keyboard. Above the sony vgp-bps13b/q battery keyboard is the battery and the power button; this area has a dotted pattern, adding a subtle visual punch.

The chassis has a slight wedge shape, which makes the dm3t taper from 1.3 inches in the back to 0.9 in the front when closed. sony vgp-bps13a/q battery While it’s equally thin as before, the 4-pound dm3t weighs 3.2 ounces lighter than is predecessor. For us, this weight puts the dm3t on borderline sony vgp-bps13/b battery between an ultraportable and a thin-and-light laptop. We noticed the notebook’s weight while carrying it around in a messenger sony vgp-bps13/q battery bag, but not so much that it was uncomfortable. Overall, the design feels solid and thoroughly modern, which is no small feat for a sub-$650 price Sony VGP-BPS10 Battery tag.

CoolSense Technology
HP paid close attention to heat when designing the dm3t, battling warm temperatures with what it calls CoolSense Sony VGP-BPS9/B Battery technology. In fact, HP claims that this is the company’s coolest notebook. What does CoolSense mean? For starters, the vents were redesigned; now, Sony VGP-BPS9A/B Battery air is sucked in through a grille that extends across the front of the system, and expelled on the left-hand side, which was made larger Sony VGP-BPS2A Battery than is normal. This is supposed to disperse the air over a wider area. HP also moved the hottest components away from the wrist rest.

If you placed them side by side, you wouldn’t realize that the 2009 and 2010 HP Pavilion dm3t shared the same name. That’s Sony VGP-BPS2C Battery because HP completely redesigned its 13-inch consumer notebook, making it thinner, lighter, and faster. The company also added in technology Sony VGP-BPS2 Battery designed to keep things cool, including a unique soft-touch cover and bottom. One thing’s for sure: The sexiness of this machine dell studio 17 battery belies its $624 price (as configured). A low-power Core i3 CPU provides enough power for most everyday tasks, and while we wish its battery lasted longer, it should see you through most of the day. So how does the new dm3t stack up to dell studio 1737 battery the competition?

Editor’s Note: Although our configuration contained a 1.2-GHz Intel Core i3-330UM dell studio 1535 battery processor, the dm3 is now offered with a 1.33-GHz Core i3-380UM CPU for the same price. Users should expect to see slightly improved dell latitude e5500 battery . We will retest the notebook, and update this review after we get an updated model.

Using a built-in accelerometer, HP’s Thermal Assistant can detect if the dm3 is being used on a desk or one’s lap–the notebook dell latitude e6400 battery gets jostled around more on the latter–and can automatically shift into maximum performance or maximum cooling mode. However, dell latitude e6500 battery we noticed little difference between the two modes; the fan seemed to be blowing constantly, regardless of where the notebook was dell latitude e4300 battery placed, and it did little to mitigate the heat.

After playing a Hulu video at full screen for 15 minutes, the touchpad and the space between the G and H keys were a comfortable dell vostro 1510 battery 77 and 83 degrees Fahrenheit, respectively. Last year’s dm3t actually ran warmer in the same two spots, measuring 85 and 87 degrees, dell vostro 1310 battery and the average ultraportable averages 93 and 95 degrees in those two locations.

Editor’s Note: Although our configuration contained a 1.2-Dell inspiron 1545 battery GHz Intel Core i3-330UM processor, the dm3 is now offered with a 1.33-GHz Core i3-380UM CPU for the same price. Users should expect to see slightly improved performance. We will retest the notebook, and update this review after Dell inspiron 1525 battery we get an updated model.

Design
Looks-wise, the 2010 HP Pavilion dm3t is a huge departure from last year’s notebook with the Dell latitude d630 battery same name, but to us that’s a good thing. Instead of a brushed aluminum lid, the new dm3t’s lid and underside are coated in a soft-touch plastic that was comfortable Dell studio 15 battery to hold, but isn’t curved like the older dm3. Inside, the deck is made of brushed aluminum and matches the island-style keyboard. Above the keyboard Dell latitude d620 battery is the battery and the power button; this area has a dotted pattern, adding a subtle visual punch.

After the same 15-minute Hulu clip, the dm3t’s bottom measured 96 degrees–6 degrees less than last year’s dm3. The average Dell xps m1330 battery ultraportable notches 99.5 degrees in this location. However, the bottom of the dm3t reached 101 degrees after 30 minutes, and 103 degrees after Dell inspiron 6400 battery an hour, while the other areas of the notebook stayed about the same.

Overall, CoolSense certainly helps, especially on the top Dell inspiron 1501 battery of the notebook, but you may notice your lap warm up after a while.

If you placed them side by side, you wouldn’t realize that the 2009 and 2010 HP Pavilion dm3t shared the same name. That’s Dell inspiron e1505 battery because HP completely redesigned its 13-inch consumer notebook, making it thinner, lighter, and faster. The company also added in technology Dell vostro 1000 battery designed to keep things cool, including a unique soft-touch cover and bottom. One thing’s for sure: The sexiness of this machine Dell gd761 battery belies its $624 price (as configured). A low-power Core i3 CPU provides enough power for most everyday tasks, and while we wish its battery lasted longer, it should see you through most of the day. So how does the new dm3t stack up to the Dell latitude d830 battery competition?

The Envy 17 3D shares the same minimalist-chic design as the smaller Envy 14, including a Dell inspiron 1520 battery rock-solid taupe chassis made of aluminum and magnesium. A few touches, such as a paisley-esque pattern of raised bumps on the Dell vostro 1500 battery lid and palm rest and HP’s glowing logo on the lid, mark this as a premium laptop. Between the machine’s durable feel and details such as quiet keys (more on that later), the Envy 17 3D feels like a luxury Dell inspiron 1720 battery laptop.

At 7.5 pounds, the Envy 17 3D is a reasonable Dell xps m1530 battery weight for a notebook this size, but you likely won’t carry it often (and then, you’ll need the AC adapter, as you’ll see in the battery section). With a maximum height of 1.5 inches, the Envy 17 3D also feels thick, especially compared to Apple’s 17-inch MacBook Dell xps m1730 battery Pro, which is just 0.98 inches.

The Envy 17 3D has a chiclet-style keyboard and number pad that stretch across the 16-inch Dell inspiron 1420 battery chassis. On the Ten Thumbs Typing Test, we typed at a fast rate of 94 words per minute, even with little practice on the keyboard. In Dell vostro 1400 battery addition to the keyboard’s backlighting, we like that the keys have a soft finish and make little noise when you type. We also appreciate that you don’t have to press the Fn key to access media controls in the function row Dell CF623 battery of keys.

Display and Sound
For the non-3D version of the Envy 17, HP offers a Dell xps m1210 battery BrightView Infinity display, which has a 1600 x 900 resolution, standard viewing angles, and a 60-percent color gamut. However, the 3D comes with a higher-res Ultra BrightView Infinity display, which has 1920 x 1080 full HD resolution, Dell latitude d610 battery wide viewing angles, a 72-percent color gamut, and a refresh rate of 120Hz. The notebook also packs ATI’s Eyefinity multi-display technology, Dell KD476 battery which lets users connect up to three external monitors, provided one is attached via mini DisplayPort.

When we watched Blu-rays on the Envy 17 3D, we were Dell 1525 Battery impressed by the level of detail. As promised, the display was bright, too, and the colors were true. We were also able to watch movies comfortably from the sides and even with the lid pushed far forward, but that required us to dim the lights; with Lenovo thinkpad r61 battery the lights on, the display was too reflective to watch at wide angles. We also wish HP included skip buttons on the keyboard; if you want to Lenovo thinkpad t400 battery skip chapters in a DVD or Blu-ray, you have to use the touchpad and touch buttons.

The Envy 17 3D’s speakers, which are tucked Lenovo/IBM Thinkpad T410 Battery discreetly onto the front lip of the notebook, are powered by Beats audio technology. When listening to music or playing games, we were impressed with the fidelity and power of the speakers. Not only were sounds crisp and bright, but laptop battery there was plenty of low-end bass, too. We liked that you can also tweak equalizer settings using the Beats audio control Sony Laptop Battery panel.

The Envy 17 3D has a large 4.2 x 2.5-inch touchpad which doubles as a clickable button. Although HP/Compaq Laptop Battery we’ve given HP’s touchpads much flack in the past for being either jumpy or having too much friction, the Envy 17 3D’s Dell Laptop Battery was easier to use. Occasionally, the cursor jumped slightly–it’s worse for those who use two hands–but for the most part we had little problem moving the cursor to specific spots on the screen. The integrated touch buttons were always Lenovo/IBM Laptop Battery easy to press.

At 7.5 pounds, the Envy 17 3D is a reasonable weight for a notebook this size, but you Sony VGP-BPS13 Battery likely won’t carry it often (and then, you’ll need the AC adapter, as you’ll see in the battery section). With a maximum height of 1.5 Sony VGP-BPS13A/B Battery inches, the Envy 17 3D also feels thick, especially compared to Apple’s 17-inch MacBook Pro, which is just 0.98 inches.

Display and Sound
For the non-3D version of the Envy 17, HP offers a BrightView Infinity display, which has a 1600 x 900 resolution, standard viewing angles, Sony VGP-BPS9/S Battery and a 60-percent color gamut. However, the 3D comes with a higher-res Ultra BrightView Infinity display, which has 1920 x Sony VGP-BPS9A/B Battery 1080 full HD resolution, wide viewing angles, a 72-percent color gamut, and a refresh rate of 120Hz. The notebook also packs ATI’s Sony VGP-BPS9/B Battery Eyefinity multi-display technology, which lets users connect up to three external monitors, provided one is attached via mini DisplayPort.

When we watched Blu-rays on the Envy 17 3D, we were impressed by the level of detail. As promised, the display was bright, too, Sony VGP-BPS9 Battery and the colors were true. We were also able to watch movies comfortably from the sides and even with the lid pushed far forward, but that Sony VGP-BPS8A Battery required us to dim the lights; with the lights on, the display was too reflective to watch at wide angles. We also Sony VGP-BPS8 Battery wish HP included skip buttons on the keyboard; if you want to skip chapters in a DVD or Blu-ray, you have to use the touchpad and touch buttons.

The Envy 17 3D’s speakers, which are tucked discreetly onto the front lip of the notebook, are powered by Beats audio technology. When Sony VGP-BPS13A/S Battery listening to music or playing games, we were impressed with the fidelity and power of the speakers. Not only were sounds crisp Sony VGP-BPS2 Battery and bright, but there was plenty of low-end bass, too. We liked that you can also tweak equalizer settings using the Beats Sony VGP-BPS2A Battery audio control panel.

Keyboard and Touchpad
The Envy 17 3D has a chiclet-style keyboard and number pad that stretch across the 16-inch chassis. On the Ten Thumbs Typing Sony VGP-BPS2B Battery Test, we typed at a fast rate of 94 words per minute, even with little practice on the keyboard. In addition to the keyboard’s backlighting, Sony VGP-BPS2C Battery we like that the keys have a soft finish and make little noise when you type. We also appreciate that you don’t have to press the Sony VGP-BPS13A/Q Battery Fn key to access media controls in the function row of keys.

The Envy 17 3D has a large 4.2 x 2.5-inch touchpad which doubles as a clickable button. Although we’ve given HP’s touchpads Sony VGP-BPS13/B Battery much flack in the past for being either jumpy or having too much friction, the Envy 17 3D’s was easier to use. Occasionally, the cursor Sony VGP-BPS13B/B Battery jumped slightly–it’s worse for those who use two hands–but for the most part we had little problem moving the cursor to specific spots Sony VGP-BPS13B/Q Battery on the screen. The integrated touch buttons were always easy to press.

Heat
While the Envy 17 we reviewed in September stayed relatively cool, we noticed much warmer temperatures on the Envy 17 3D. After Sony VGP-BPS13/Q Battery playing a Hulu video at full screen for 15 minutes, the touchpad stayed a chilly 84 degrees Fahrenheit, but the space between the G and Sony VGP-BPS21A/B Battery H keys was a very warm 105 degrees, and the middle of the underside was 100 degrees.

The left side of the Envy 17 3D is the real trouble area. Sony VGP-BPS21/S Battery We can accept a fan that blows 120-degree air. But after we played Call of Duty for 10 minutes, the left Shift and Caps Lock keys were a blazing 125 degrees. That’s Sony VGP-BPS21 Battery disturbing.

Heat
The Samsung RF510 stayed pleasantly cool throughout our testing. Even after streaming video at full screen for 15 minutes, Sony VGP-BPS21A Battery the keyboard measured a temperate 92 degrees. The touchpad clocked in at a chilly 89 degrees, as did the middle bottom area. Those numbers Sony VGP-BPS21B Battery are excellent, because we consider anything below 95 degrees comfortable and anything below 90 degrees imperceptible. By comparison, the bottom of the good battery Dell XPS 15 reached a warm 102 degrees.

Go big or go home. That’s the mantra of the HP Envy 17 3D. apple battery This large but stylish desktop replacement features an Intel Core i7 processor, powerful ATI graphics, a 3D-capable, full HD display, and a Blu-ray player. Starting at $1,599 ($1,649 as configured), the 3D version of the notebook costs the same as saus akkus a similarly equipped non-3D version we reviewed just three months ago. Sounds like a sweet deal. But how does this machine stack up to laptops powered toshiba akkus by Nvidia’s 3D Vision technology? And is there enough 3D content to make donning those glasses worth the trouble? Our in-depth review ibm akkus reveals all.

Editor’s Note: Portions of this review were taken from our earlier review sony akkus of the HP Envy 17.
Now that 15-inch notebooks are the new dell akkus family PCs, you’ll want a hub that can do it all: web surfing, word processing, streaming movies, photo and video editing, and, yes, even gaming. The Samsung RF510 ($729 on Amazon) answers the call for versatility by combining a Core i5 processor with discrete apple akkus Nvidia graphics, stylish looks, and a responsive keyboard. But is this 5.6-pound system really good enough to play demanding games or full HD acer akkus videos?

Design
At 14.9 x 10.1 X 1.5 inches and 5.6 pounds, the RF510 is too bulky to carry around all day ibm akku but light enough to move from the living room to the bedroom and then the kids’ room in a flash. It’s also noticeably lighter than the Dell XPS 15 sony akku (6.1 pounds, 15 x 10.4 x 1.5 inches).

Though sized like a family PC, the Samsung RF510 has a sleek, black aesthetic that looks equally at home in the living room toshiba akku and the conference room. The glossy black lid, which resists most fingerprints, is emblazoned with a chrome Samsung logo and accented by chrome hinges dell akku and chrome lines on the left and right sides. Though we like the ivory design and curved shape of the less expensive Samsung SF510, the RF510’s saus akku sleek aethetic looks more professional.

Once opened, the notebook looks even classier. A comfortable matte black palmrest sits below acer akku an island-style keyboard with tastefully rounded keys and a chrome-colored background. Above the keyboard is a chrome button area with hp akku volume controls, Wi-Fi on/off, and power buttons with sci-fi blue lighting behind them. The subtle speaker holes that run across the entire width of the upper deck add to the high-tech aesthetic. Even the screen bezel has a subtle dotted pattern that matches apple akku the speaker holes.

Keyboard and Touchpad
The RF510’s island-style keyboard sports a numeric keypad and offers solid tactile feedback fushitsu akku and a smooth key surface, though it lacks a backlight. We scored our typical rate of 80 words per minute on the Ten Thumbs Typing Test, with a dell battery modest 2 percent error rate.

The 3.5 x 2.3-inch touchpad has a pleasant matte surface that allowed us to navigate around the desktop toshiba battery with great accuracy and execute pinch-to-zoom gestures smoothly. The notebook’s discrete touchpad buttons offered just the right amount of feedback; saus battery that’s a welcome improvement over the SF510’s jerky clickpad.

Design
The Envy 17 3D shares the same minimalist-chic sony battery design as the smaller Envy 14, including a rock-solid taupe chassis made of aluminum and magnesium. A few touches, such as a paisley-esque pattern of raised bumps on the lid and palm rest and HP’s glowing logo on the lid, mark this as a premium laptop. apple battery Between the machine’s durable feel and details such as quiet keys (more on that later), the Envy 17 3D feels like a luxury acer battery laptop.

This stealth fighter-styled system gets an updated CPU and Nvidia graphics.

Last Spring, ASUS wowed us with its G73Jh gaming notebook, VGP-BPS9/B and now the company is back with a refreshed version that pairs the same great design with a faster processor, a more powerful Nvidia GTX 460 graphics chip, VGP-BPS9 and a USB 3.0 port for good measure. But are the improved specs enough to give this system a leg up on the competition?

Design
The G73JW-A1 is identical to the G73Jh-A2. At 8.8 pounds and 16.6 x 12.8 x 2.3 inches, the ASUS G73JW-A1 VGP-BPS9/S would never be mistaken for an ultraportable, but compared to some other systems we’ve tested–such as the 10.6-pound, 18-inch Toshiba Qosmio X505–it seems rather svelte. Carrying it and its 2-pound power brick around in an oversize messenger-style bag was no problem even when we had to stand for a long time VGP-BPS9A/B on the bus.

Modeled after the F-117 Nighthawk stealth fighter, the G73JW-A1 lacks the bling Vostro 1510 Battery of colorful notebooks like the Alienware M17x, but its sleek, angular design and gunmetal gray exterior make it one of the most attractive Inspiron 1545 battery systems we’ve seen. The dual exhausts on the back combine with the subtle silver ASUS logo and Republic of Gaming emblem to make this product look more like one of the planes you’d fly in a game than the notebook you’d be gaming on. Open up the lid, and the subtle theme continues inside. Only a few small buttons sit on top of the simple black keyboard and the gray touchpad simply blends into the deck. No colorful status lights or bright Latitude E6400 Battery red buttons here.

What really makes the G73JW-A1 stand out is the rubberized material used on both VGP-BPS13B/Q the lid and deck. More notebooks should use this type of material, because it’s incredibly comfortable to touch, resists finger prints, stays cool, and provides a significant feeling of durability and quality.

Keyboard and Touchpad
Unfortunately, the G73JW-A1’s backlit VGP-BPS13/B keyboard is a huge disappointment, with tiny stiff keys that are difficult for both typists and gamers alike. On the ten thumbs typing test, we got one of our worst scores ever–69 words per minute and a 3-percent error rate as opposed to our average rate of 80 wpm VGP-BPS13 and 1-percent. And that was the third time we tried; on the first two attempts we made so many errors that we just had to restart.

One reason the keyboard is so difficult to touch type on is that the hard keys give really VGP-BPS13A/B weak tactile feedback and require really hard and deliberate strokes. Another issue is that their flat, square shape lacks the kind of curves that make it easy to feel your way around the rows, and the narrow space between them seems smaller than other devices.

Why ASUS decided to not use all available space Dell GD761 Battery for the keyboard remains a mystery. The chassis is 16-inches wide, but has 1.5 inches of empty plastic on either side of the keyboard. Meanwhile, The arrow keys and numeric keypad–both essential for game play–are actually smaller than the rest of the keys, making it difficult to use them as controls. To make matters worse, the sharp incline and deep palm rest (more wasted space) can make it hard to keep your hands from PA3534U-1BRS slipping backward as you type.

Size-wise, the 4.4 x 2.2-inch touchpad has everything going for it: Vostro 1710 Battery a large smooth, but not too smooth surface, multitouch gesture support, and two discrete buttons that offer just the right amount of tactile feedback. However, on the first review unit we received, the cursor would get stuck and then jump unexpectedly Vostro 1720 Battery around the screen; we didn’t experience this problem on a second review unit. Considering battery that many gamers use mice, the lack of a touchpad on/off button is a glaring omission.

Heat
For a notebook with a Core i7 CPU and power good battery Nvidia graphics card under the hood, the G73JW-A1 stays extremely cool. After streaming a video at full screen for 15 minutes, we measured the keyboard at a cool 87 degrees, the bottom at a temperate 90 degrees, and the touchpad at a chilly 78 degrees. Unlike other gaming battery notebooks that have hot palm rests and decks, we didn’t notice a single hot spot on the G73JW-A1 even when we were gaming and that’s battery quite an impressive feat. We consider temperatures below 95 degrees comfortable and below 90 degrees to be basically imperceptible.

This keyboard lets you type much faster than you can with touch-typing VGP-BPS13 while protecting your tablet, but is it worth $99?

When the iPad first came out, there was a lot sony VGP-BPS9/B Battery of speculation as to whether it could replace a full-fledged notebook. However, many came to realize that, without a keyboard, it was difficult to type longer documents. Enter the Kensington KeyFolio, a Bluetooth keyboard built into an iPad case. Will this $99 accessory Sony VGP-BPS9A/B Battery let you leave your laptop behind?

Design
From the outside, the KeyFolio looks like an elegant iPad case–which in fact, it is. It’s made sony VGP-BPS9 battery of black faux leather with white stitching. Flip over the cover, and you reveal its second function as a wireless keyboard.

The keyboard is covered in a rubber membrane sony VGP-BPS9/S battery that protects it from spills and prevents the screen from getting scratched. A few ridges above the keyboard let you adjust the angle of the iPad, but in doing so, it covers the Pairing button. There’s no way to secure the iPad to the keyboard, so the KeyFolio has to Vostro 1510 Battery be used on a flat surface such as a desk; putting it on our lap caused the iPad to fall backwards.

The case weighs just over one pound, which is light in the grand scheme of things, but, when Inspiron 1545 battery coupled with the 1.5-pound iPad, this combo weighs almost as much as the Asus Eee PC 1015PEM.

Performance
Pairing the KeyFolio with the iPad was easy. Simply Dell Latitude E6400 Battery turn the keyboard on (there’s a small switch on the right side above the keys), and press the large Connect button on the top. A message will appear on the screen asking you to type in a code on the keyboard to complete the pairing.

The keyboard on the KeyFolio is about the same size as one you’d find on a netbook. However, it’s not nearly as good as, say, the Vostro 1710 Battery Toshiba Mini NB305. The rubber membrane was soft to the touch, and in general, we found the keys responsive. In fact, they Vostro 1720 Battery were a bit too responsive; we found that we would often accidentally type the same letter twice in a row until we figured out just how much pressure to apply.

We found the KeyFolio, like early netbook toshiba PA3534U-1BRS Battery keyboards, to be slightly irregular. For example, in order to make room for arrow keys, there’s no right Shift key. (For touch typists, that’s a dealbreaker right there.) Also, the quote button is not in its usual place between L and Enter–only the Colon key Sony VGP-BPS13A/B Battery is there. Until we realized this, we found ourselves writing things such as "I;m" instead if "I’m."

However, we like that Kensington reversed the function keys; that is, media controls and volume Dell GD761 Battery can be accessed without having to press the Fn key first. Also, the F5 key can be used to bring up the on-screen keyboard, which is nice when you don’t want to use Kensington’s

The KeyFolio’s battery is rated to last 90 hours; that’s a lot of typing. When–or if–it runs low, you can recharge it using the microUSB port on the side.

Verdict
The idea that you can take just a tablet good battery with you on business trips is an intoxicating one, as it would free up weight battery and room in your carry-on. The $99 Kensington KeyFolio makes this dream a reality. However, the keyboard’s misplaced keys (and missing right Shift key), the inability to use it securely in one’s lap, and oversensitivity are real turn-offs. The KeyFolio is certainly better than nothing, but you may want to wait until something better comes battery along.

Since it entered the U.S. VGP-BPS9A/B notebook market, Samsung has established a reputation for pairing powerful components with head-turning designs. The Samsung RR540 continues that trend, though not necessarily in the best way possible. This 15-inch laptop ($999 as configured) has the power to best even more VGP-BPS9 expensive machines in its weight class and offers smooth Blu-ray playback. However, while the faux-wood pattern on the lid and deck VGP-BPS9/S will certainly get stares, you’ll either love it or hate it.

Design
At 5.5 pounds and 14.9 x 10.1 x 1.4 inches, the R540 is relatively light Dell Vostro 1510 Battery for a notebook with this size display. The notebook has a smooth, brown plastic lid with a wood grain pattern, making it look like a Formica countertop. Not only does this surface pick up fingerprints, it has a somewhat cheap feel.

On the inside, Samsung’s attempts Dell Inspiron 1545 battery to mimic wooden surfaces are more successful. The palm rest and chassis, still made of brown plastic, at least have etched grains instead of painted-on ones, along with a more subtle matte finish. The touch buttons, too, have this faux-wood look, although the touchpad itself is smooth, with a pattern of brown dots.

We give Samsung props for trying something different, but we much prefer the look and feel of the ASUS’s U33Jc. That 13-inch notebook Dell Latitude E6400 Battery uses real bamboo, and it’s much more elegant.

Keyboard and Touchpad
The R540 has terraced keys that are positioned close together, as opposed to a chiclet-style VGP-BPS13/B layout. Even with amply sized keys, the keyboard deck can still accommodate a full number pad. Particularly since Samsung didn’t skimp on the Enter and right Shift keys, we were able to type quickly (for us, at least) at a rate of 93 words per minute. As we typed, though, we felt some flex beneath our fingers; this keyboard VGP-BPS13 panel isn’t the sturdiest on the block

The touchpad isn’t large, at 2.8 x 1.6 inches, but it felt smooth and offered next to no resistance. The twin touch buttons, likewise, VGP-BPS13B/Q are easy to press, although they’re on the noisy side and we found ourselves wishing they were a bit taller so they could better VGP-BPS13A/B accommodate the pad of our finger.

Ambient Heat
Even after extended use, the R540 doesn’t get as hot as other notebooks in its class. After Vostro 1710 Battery watching a Hulu clip at full screen for 15 minutes, we measured temperatures of 88 degrees on the touchpad, 89 degrees at the center of the keyboard, and 83 degrees on the underside of the machine. (It did, however, reach a hot 100 degrees near the vent.) That’s not bad when you consider that the average notebook this size Vostro 1720 Battery reaches temperatures of 90, 93, and 97 degrees in the same spots.

Display and Sound
The 15.6-inch display has a resolution of 1366 x 768, which is standard for an inexpensive notebook of this size, and is good dell Latitude E5400 Battery enough to watch 720p video. Although it has a Blu-ray player, the benefits might be lost on this lower-resolution display. When we watched "The Other Boleyn Girl" on Blu-ray, the picture was sharp, colors accurate, and the screen bright, but thanks to the display’s glossy finish we had a hard time making out the picture when watching dell Latitude E4300 Battery from the sides or with the lid pushed forward.

The twin speakers, located above dell Latitude E6500 Battery the keyboard, produced fairly strong sound, given that this isn’t a souped-up multimedia machine. "Maria, Maria" by Santana, for instance, sounded as it should both at medium and high volumes, and at all times we were able to make out the strong bass notes. More guitar-based battery songs, such as "Someday" by The Strokes, sounded clear and balanced as well.

Ports and Webcam
The R540 has a predictable range good battery of ports, including three USB 2.0, HDMI and VGA output, an Ethernet jack, Kensington lock slot, dell Latitude E5500 Battery headphone and mic ports, and an SD card reader. (While SD is the most common format, people who own, say, Sony cameras and use Memory Stick cards, are out of luck.)

The webcam’s VGA video was adequate, but good battery during a Skype call voices sounded weak and not completely clear. We could hear an echo when we spoke, and voices became harder to make out even when we simply leaned back in our chair, away from the camera. On the plus side, our videos and still photos battery were well-lit, and the included CyberLink YouCam software offers an array of fun filters, animations, 2D frames, and avatars

The ASUS UL20FT is an all-new update to the popular UL20A. Featuring a high-performance VGP-BPS9/B Intel Core i3 processor and impressive battery life, this thin and light laptop has a great deal to offer. The team at Notebook Review has an exclusive first look at this new 12-inch notebook, and we’re excited to show you how this lightweight laptop performs. Read on to find out if the UL20FT deserves a place VGP-BPS9A/B on your notebook shopping list.

Build and Design
The ASUS UL series were some of the first laptops on the market to use Intel Consumer Ultra Low Voltage (CULV) processors. These CPUs VGP-BPS9 consumed only a fraction of the power that other processors required, meaning any laptop running a CULV processor could last longer on a single battery charge and the laptop itself could be made thinner and lighter because these processors didn’t require the massive VGP-BPS13 cooling systems that other laptops needed.

The ASUS UL20A was the first 12-inch laptop in the UL series and quickly became popular VGP-BPS9/S with students and working adults who needed a lightweight laptop. The unfortunate down side to the UL20A was that it used a relatively low-performance version of the CULV processors. Now ASUS has revived the UL20 as the UL20FT, featuring a new Core i3 low voltage processor and a larger hard drive. The notebook chassis Vostro 1510 Battery itself remains unchanged other than a slight modification to accommodate a new 16:9 ratio widescreen display.

The build quality of the UL20FT is very VGP-BPS13A/B good with a solid main chassis that doesn’t squeak, creak, or flex even under significant pressure. The Inspiron 1545 battery screen hinges are nice and tight, making it a little difficult to open the laptop with one hand but also helping to keep the screen where you want it. The metal-covered screen lid feels extremely nice and offers a fair amount of structural rigidity, but the middle of the screen still flexes under heavy pressure. The screen itself also shows E6400 Battery obvious signs of distortion when you press on the back of the screen lid, so the attractive metal lid might not offer much protection.

The bottom of the notebook includes a single access plate for the RAM and the hard drive. The two VGP-BPS13/B RAM slots are located side-by-side rather than being stacked. This internal layout helps keep the chassis design as thin as possible. The 2GB memory module only takes up a single slot so it’s easy to upgrade to 4GB simply by purchasing an extra 2GB stick of memory. Unfortunately, it’s significantly more difficult to access Studio 17 Battery the wireless card because of the thin design, so don’t expect to swap out the Wi-Fi card for another model without completely disassembling the laptop. That said, the target audience for this notebook probably isn’t likely to make any changes beyond memory upgrades an a possible hard Studio 1737 Battery drive swap.

Screen and Speakers
The 12.1-inch diagonal display on the UL20FT-A1 features LED backlighting and a 16:9 aspect Studio 1535 Battery ratio with 1366 x 768 resolution. We’d give this screen a "good" rating within the narrow vertical viewing angle sweet spot. The backlight in our review unit is even and bright but the top left corner of the screen suffers from a little backlight bleed. Contrast is sharp and colors are good at default settings. Vertical viewing angles E5400 Battery are just as narrow as we typically see with most laptops while the horizontal viewing angles (side view) are nearly flawless. If you are using this laptop for color-accurate editing you will need to be certain you’re viewing the screen from straight ahead.

The ASUS UL20FT features Altec-Lansing stereo speakers located just below the palm rests on the bottom front edge of the notebook. The speakers E4300 Battery sound terrific when the laptop is resting on a hard surface like a desk as the sound bounces up off the desk and toward the user. Unfortunately, the sound isn’t as good if you’re using this notebook as a "laptop." In the NotebookReview.com test lab we usually call downward-facing speaker "crotch speakers" because E6500 Battery they direct sound at your lap rather than your ears. If you’re using the UL20FT on your lap you can expect the audio to sound muffled and distorted against your legs. On the other hand, the headphone jack provides a great, static-free connection for external speakers or earphones.

Keyboard and Touchpad
The Chiclet-style keyboard on the UL20FT is an E5500 Battery adequate design with a good support frame underneath. Individual keys are a little mushy, but still provide acceptable feedback when pressed. There are no dedicated multimedia keys, but the arrow keys do serve double duty as media controls when used with the function (fn) key. Each key is flat with a nice matte texture and a little extra spacing to prevent typos. The keyboard frame (the silver surrounding the black keys) on our review sample suffers from a bit Vostro 1400 Battery of bounce or flex when you press down firmly with your fingers, but this isn’t a problem when typing.

The Synaptics touchpad is a quality touchpad interface with a lightly textured surface and excellent Vostro 1500 Battery responsiveness. The touchpad itself is a little small, but that is to be expected on a 12-inch laptop. The touchpad drivers good battery provide excellent accuracy and minimal lag with a range of options. The touchpad buttons are hidden under a single "rocker bar" and have a shallow press with audible "click" when pressed. I really hate single touchpad buttons … particularly when there is no clear division between the left and right sides. I frequently pressed down too close to the middle of the single button and either failed to activate the touchpad button or accidentally pressed the wrong side of the touchpad. ASUS designers need to either completely separate the touchpad buttons or at least make a small indented area in the middle so you can fell where the left touchpad button ends and the right battery button begins.

Ports and Features
The ASUS UL20FT offers a fairly average number of ports for a 12-inch notebook. ASUS dell battery gives you three USB 2.0 ports, Ethernet, two video out ports, a media card reader and dual audio jacks. This is pretty much par battery for the course when it comes to thin and light laptops and netbooks. Still, we would have liked to see at least one high speed data port, suach as USB 3.0, eSATA or even an ExpressCard slot, on this laptop. The UL20FT also lacks an optical drive in order to make the chassis as thin as possible, but this will probably hp battery only bother people who like to watch DVDs during a flight.

This smart phone app does it all–anti-virus, data backup, and a way to find your phone should it go missing.

Now that smart phones are proliferating the market, it’s only natural for wayward VGP-BPS9/B developers to create malware for the platforms. Enter Lookout Mobile Security, a mobile app that not only prevents harmful programs from getting on your smart phone, but also backs up (some) of your data and can even help you find your handset if it’s lost. Not bad for a free app.

Installation
Lookout Mobile Security is compatible with Android, BlackBerry, and Windows Mobile phones, and can be downloaded from those respective markets, or by going to www.mylookout.com and creating an account. We used the latter VGP-BPS9A/B method and registered our Nexus One phone; it was as easy as entering our phone number. After synching, an image of our device appeared on the left side of the web page, and below it, our phone number.

On the right are tabs for Dashboard, Anti-Virus, Data Backup, Missing Device, and Settings. The Dashboard view is selected by default, and it shows at a glance the status of your phone. If everything is okay, a green bar indicates so; below it are three large green check marks, indicating the status of Anti-Virus, Backup, VGP-BPS9 and Missing Device.

The phone app interface is just as simple: At the top is a green check mark and the words "Everything is OK." Below are three larger check marks indicating the status of Anti-Virus protection, Data Backup, and Missing Device. From the phone itself, you can run a virus scan and perform a backup, as well as set the frequency of both. You can also choose the types of files to back up. The app is designed to run quietly in the background; company reps told us it used less than 1 percent VGP-BPS9/S of the battery’s resources; indeed, Lookout rarely, if ever, showed up on the battery usage meter.

Anti-Virus
Users can check their phones for malware by pressing the Run Virus Scan button in the Lookout app. A full scan of 86 apps on our Nexus One took about 6 seconds. Lookout told us that some of the analysis is done on the device, while some takes place on Lookout’s servers, keeping phone resource requirements to a minimum. After scanning, a log is created on the Lookout website stating the number of files scanned, dangerous apps found, Vostro 1710 Battery and recommended actions. The app also checks to see if any apps being downloaded are dangerous and warns you against installing them. Unfortunately, there is no identity protection yet.

Backup
Data backup can be performed either from the phone or website by pressing the Start Backup button. Currently, backups are available only for photos, contacts, and records. Once the data was saved to Lookout’s servers, the web interface made it easy to view all three types individually, as well as when they Dell Studio 17 Battery were backed up. We were also given the option of deleting or downloading the data.

Users get 2GB of free online storage and can schedule backups on a recurring basis, as with virus scans. From the website, users can also restore the data to their phone, or transfer it to a new one. This feature will be even more useful once Lookout Dell Studio 1737 Battery supports app backups (not scheduled as of yet).

Phone Recovery
Probably the most useful service Lookout provides is finding your phone should it go missing. Provided your phone is turned on, pressing the Locate button on the website pulls up a map showing the approximate location of your phone. In practice, it was fairly accurate. Within 16 seconds, it had narrowed the location of our handset within 500 meters of its actual position, shown as a large circle on the map. After 1 minute, the circle shrank to 70 meters, and after 2 minutes, it was down to 50 meters. Even better, Lookout e-mails Dell Studio 1535 Battery you a link to the map, as well as its latitude and longitude. However, GPS must be activated; there’s no way for the app to turn it on.

If you’ve misplaced your phone, Lookout’s "Scream" feature makes the phone emit a loud siren noise for about a minute. After we pressed the Scream button on the website, an on-screen window warned that the sound would be loud and annoying, which it was. The alarm will activate good battery even if the phone is set to silent. The one thing that would make this service even better is if you could remotely wipe your phone, though that feature is typically reserved for paid apps.

Verdict
For a free app, Lookout Mobile Security packs in a lot of functionality. Not only does it protect your phone against the emerging threat of malware, but it makes sure your data is protected in case your phone goes missing. And if it does get lost, Lookout provides two ways to try to find it. While the likelihood of getting a virus on your phone is still quite small (for now), the chances of misplacing your smart phone are much greater; it’s nice to know that Lookout Mobile Security battery has you covered in both regards.

Believe it or not, hackers have grown lazier. According to security experts, digital sony VGP-BPS9/B Battery miscreants and criminals no longer have to spend hours creating their attacks. They can just check off a few boxes to generate convincing phishing websites and malware that’s made to look like legitimate security software. Symantec alone receives roughly 20 million pieces of malware each month, up from 10 million in 2008. We sat down with Patrick Martin, senior manager at Symantec’s security response and Dmitri Alperovitch, vice president of threat research for McAfee, to get a handle on which threats to watch out for and how to protect your data.

Antivirus In Disguise
File this under “rotten scams that have gotten worse.” Researchers from Symantec and McAfee agree that “rogue AV,” or malware that pretends to be security software, has become more common. The scary thing is that you can Sony VGP-BPS9A/B Battery encounter a dialog box belonging to malicious so-called security software even while browsing a legitimate website. Once you download the malware (surrendering your credit card number in the process, of course), the thieves can not only use this information to extort more money, but sell other hackers access to your computer, install password-stealing trojans to extract more sensitive data, or use your PC as a bot that spams and infects other computers.
Fortunately, updated security software should keep you safe, but for added protection we recommend that if you see a pop-up from an unfamiliar security program, click the back button in your browser and get off that site as fast as possible. If the pop-up is a dialog box, just click the X to close it.
Martin says the problem will only continue getting worse so long as there are suckers out there falling for such scams. “It works: people click,” he said. “It’s just like marketers. People send junk mail because it works.” McAfee, for one, has a free cybercrime response unit, including an online scanner as well as access to agents sony VGP-BPS9 battery who can help resolve problems.

Antisocial Networks
In the 1980s people fell prey to a series of scams that became known as Nigerian bank fraud, in which con men from this African country sent letters to Americans, posing as exiled princes in need of a loan. Since the Internet has become ubiquitous, these scammers have turned to e-mail, either sony VGP-BPS9/S battery asking for sensitive information, such as bank account numbers, or leading people to fraudulent websites that pretend to be bank portals.

Recently, though, ploys like these have grown more convincing. By hacking into someone’s Facebook or Twitter account, a hacker can send messages to that user’s friends, pretending to be the owner of the account. Symantec’s Martin Dell GD761 Battery and McAfee’s Alperovitch have each seen plenty of instances in which thieves pretend that the owner of the account has found him or herself in a foreign country, robbed or otherwise bereft of money.

Other hackers embed their messages with links to phishing sites. Alperovitch warns that once a hacker has gained access to your friend’s profile, he has a dangerous amount of information about both his victim and you. “If you have a Facebook page that’s talking about your personal life,” he said. “Your friends—all PA3534U-1BRS that information can be accessed by fraudsters and used to craft a phishing message that’s targeted specifically at you.”
Regardless of what form the attack takes, the consensus is that on social networks, people let their guard down around virtual friends. “The level of awareness, the inhibitions someone might have in saying, ‘I don’t know if that’s safe to do’ is sometimes lower,” said Martin

How Much Would You Pay For A Streaming-Only Netflix Account?

Canadian Nextflix subscribers had something to celebrate this week as the company Vostro 1710 Battery launched a Streaming Only subscription option for just $7.99/month. With this users get no DVDs in the mail but access to all the on demand content they can watch. Currently there’s no equivalent subscription offer here in the U. S. — for $8.99 you can stream all you want and get 1 DVD a month — but Netflix is apparently considering it, according to this blog post.

I spend far more time watching on demand content good battery from Netflix then maintaining my DVD queue these days, so I could definitely go for this. The price for streaming plus 1 DVD is already less than Hulu Plus (and contains no commercials), so I suspect the price will fall into the realm of the Good Deal. However, my hope would be something along the lines of $4.99, not $7.99. We’ll see how it shakes out.

In the meantime, what would you pay for a Streaming Only option for Netflix? And under what conditions? The recent battery announcement of more content from NBC is definitely a good thing, but movie hounds don’t have as much to choose from as those of us who mainly use the service to watch TV shows

The Acer Aspire 5735Z is a low-priced mainstream notebook with a 15.6”, 16:9 aspect 131L Battery ratio display. It retails for less than $500 and has reasonable build quality, a full keyboard with number pad, and decent battery life.

I picked up the 5735-4744 for $399.99 plus VGP-BPS9/B sales tax at Best Buy. The specifications are more than reasonable for the amount of money paid. There are higher-end configurations available with larger hard drives and more RAM, but they are naturally priced higher.

Build and Design
The 5735Z has a no-frills plastic construction and a relatively simple design. It feels surprisingly solid in the hand, and despite the all-plastic construction, generally does not flex. The 5735Z has a sound internal frame since the chassis is stiff resists flexing. The palmrests are inflexible, as are the surfaces surrounding the keyboard. The VGP-BPS9A/B bottom of the notebook is made of thicker plastic than I expected and also does not flex. There are no squeaks or creaks while handling the notebook.

The plastic surrounding the keyboard is a smooth dark gray color with a non-glossy finish, which seems to be relatively durable. The lid and screen casing are a glossy black plastic, which attracts fingerprints easily and is more prone to scratches than the dark gray plastic. The bottom VGP-BPS9 and sides of the notebook are a textured black plastic, which is more durable than the other plastics used.

The lid is secured to the chassis by two strong hinges that do not let the display wobble. The lid itself resists twisting well, partly because of its stocky shape since it has wider than usual 16:9 aspect screen that lends more support. Pushing in VGP-BPS9/S on the back of the display will yield small ripples on the screen, but only if abnormal pressure is used. When closed, the lid is securely held down by a latch.

The design of the 5735Z is simplistic. The notebook is quite wide relative to its width, again due to the 16:9 aspect ultra-widescreen Vostro 1710 Battery display. The 5735Z places function ahead of form.

The 5735Z is not built like a tank, but it has pleasantly sturdy build quality and feels solid. This notebook should be able to stand up to everyday use and last for many years if proper care is taken.

Screen
The Aspire 5735Z has one of the new 16:9 aspect ratio displays; most notebooks have 16:10 displays, so 16:9 screens are wider than usual. The 5735Z’s panel measures 15.6” diagonally and has a 1366×768 pixels resolution (a typical 16:10 display is 15.4” diagonally and has a 1280×800 resolution). It takes some time to get used to the extra-wide 16:9 display. Only 768 pixels of vertical space mean a lot of scrolling, but it is difficult to throw up any flags here given the price point of this Vostro 1510 Battery notebook. The extra wide resolution means working with two windows side-by-side is doable.

The picture quality of the display is beautiful. The display, made by AU Optronics (model AUO10EC), has an 8 ms response time and is advertised to have a 33% wider color gamut (color range). The colors are vibrant and contrast is very good. The display has ample brightness. There is some light leakage from the bottom of the screen, but it is unnoticeable unless the screen is completely black. Side-to-side viewing angles are decent, Inspiron 1545 battery with minimal color inversion. Colors invert sharply from above and below, but this is normal for an LCD panel.
Overall, the display beat my expectations and is pleasing to look at. The resolution is a bit limited in terms of vertical space, but it is difficult to complain.

Speakers
There are two stereo speakers located above the keyboard. These are typical notebook speakers, with little to no bass E6400 Battery and they sound rather tinny. For a more enjoyable audio experience, use a pair of headphones or speakers.

The 5735Z has volume up/down buttons right above the speakers, which are convenient and a welcome addition to any notebook.

Processor and Performance
I will run a few benchmarks on the 5735Z to demonstrate its performance capabilities.

Windows Experience Index (WEI) is a benchmark built into Windows Vista. It scores various components of a computer out of 5.9. Higher scores are better.

The 5735Z is held back by its E5500 Battery integrated graphics, which bring the score down to an average 3.5. The other components – the processor, memory, and hard drive – have reasonably high scores.

wPrime is an arithmetic benchmark that forces the processor to calculate the square roots of numbers. Lower times are better.

This time places the Intel Pentium Dual-Core T3200 within 15% of the performance of a Core 2 Duo E6500 Battery with a similar frequency (around 2.0 – 2.2GHz). The T3200 is essentially a Core 2 Duo with reduced specifications.

HDTune tests the read, write, and access time of a hard drive. Higher numbers are better for transfer rates, and lower for access time

The Western Digital 160GB 5400RPM drive posts some nice results. An average transfer rate E4300 Battery of 50MB/s is very respectable for a 5400RPM hard drive. This particular drive, the WD1600BEVT, has a single platter, which greatly helps performance.

The Intel GMA 4500MHD integrated graphics card is designed to lower costs and save energy while providing enough power for smooth video playback and light 3D applications. We run 3DMark06 to compare it to other graphics cards:

A typical gaming notebook scores north E5400 Battery of 3,500 points in this benchmark, so gamers will obviously not be flocking to the 5735Z.

Heat and Noise
A single fan on the left side of the 5735Z keeps its internal components cool. The fan is always on but is difficult to hear, even in a quiet room. There is minimal noise even at full tilt. The surface temperatures of the notebook are docile, not more than 10-20 degrees above room temperature in most places. The bottom of the notebook gets about ten degrees warmer than on the top. The heat generated by this notebook is insignificant – there is not much of it to begin with.

Keyboard and Touchpad
A computer’s input devices, especially the keyboard, are of utmost importance to me when it comes to buying a computer. The 5735Z PA3534U-1BRS does well in this area. The full-size keyboard and separate numeric keypad have good tactile feedback. The feel is a bit soft but movements are defined enough to allow accurate typing. There is some flex in the center of the keyboard but it does not detract from the overall typing experience. The keys have a matte non-slip surface. The four column numeric keypad is a very welcome addition to this notebook. For someone like me that does spreadsheet work all the time, it is a valuable asset.

The touchpad is proportional to the screen dimensions. It has a matte surface Dell GD761 Battery and is easy to track on. The two buttons are very loud, so be sure to tap-to-click in quiet places instead of using the buttons. The 5735Z’s touchpad has some unique features. Using two fingers in a pinching motion will zoom in and out, and moving a finger in a circular motion will scroll.

Input and Output Ports
Let’s take a short picture tour. All descriptions are left to right.

The 5735Z does not have a lot to offer in terms good battery of connections, but I imagine a few USB ports and the Ethernet jack will be all most buyers of this laptop require. The memory card reader is an added bonus.

Wireless
The 5735Z comes with an Atheros AR5B91 wireless card supporting 802.11a/b/g/draft-N bands. Wireless range and signal strength is excellent, superior to the wireless solution in my HP Pavilion dv5t. I had no trouble connecting to a variety of wireless networks. It is surprising to see a draft-N wireless card in a battery budget notebook.

Battery
The included six-cell battery is rated for 11.1V and 46Wh/4600mAh. This battery’s capacity is not particularly high but is on par with the six-cell batteries in competing notebooks. In power-saving mode with the screen brightness at half, I measured two hours and fifty battery minutes of life while surfing the Internet. Only the buyer can determine whether this time is sufficient; for my personal use, it is more than enough.

Operating System and Software
The 5735-4744 comes pre-loaded with Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1. Usually very inexpensive notebooks like this one come with Vista Home Basic, a cheaper and more limited version of Windows, so Home Premium is nice to see.

Acer includes many pre-installed utilities, including Acer GridVista and Acer Empowering Technology. NTI Backup Now! Software is included and allows you to make a backup of your entire hard drive. A lot of "bloatware," or junk good batteries software, is also pre-loaded. I spent upwards of thirty minutes uninstalling games and other garbage from the Control Panel.
